You can rent this vacation house on the shore of Winter Harbor, on a high ledge on the eastern end of Vinalhaven island. It faces east, with a spectacular view down the harbor and across Penobscot Bay at Deer Isle and Mt. Desert Island. The 13-acre property is on a peninsula and is very secluded. It has deep water access on the harbor with both a dock and a mooring. There is also a grassy field, and the shore of "The Privilege", a peaceful tidal inlet which is a perfect place for small boats and swimming. Adjoining the property on one end is Starboard Rock, an island landmark 160 feet tall with a trail leading to the top.
The house was built in 1963. The living room has a high ceiling and built in benches with cushions plus a wood-burning Franklin stove. There are 3 bedrooms: one with a full-sized bed, one with a king-sized bed or 2 twins, reachable by a ship's ladder, and one small room with 3 bunks, suitable for children or small adults. There is one full bath and one half bath which also contains the washing machine. (There is no dryer but there is a laundry line along the backside of the house.) The kitchen was remodeled in 1998 and includes a large wood-burning stove. We love to use it for cooking and for heating the house on chilly days, but there is also an electric stove for those who prefer it. In the middle of the kitchen is a large table for eating. There is no dishwasher.
The house is fully furnished, including bedding. Firewood is provided. There is no television or VCR.
Facing the view is a large deck. Wild blueberries and huckleberries grow all around the house, and cruising yachts and schooners often spend the night on the harbor below the house, making for wonderful boat-watching. We have seen many ospreys and even bald-headed eagles from the house, and seals and porpoises playing in the waters below. It is a very peaceful place and will suit those who like tranquility, privacy and rustic charm.
The island of Vinalhaven is large – about seven miles long. The Maine State Ferry Service currently operates 6 ferries a day in each direction between Rockland and the town of Vinalhaven. The crossing takes one hour and 15 minutes. Penobscot Island Air also runs small planes right to a gravel runway on the island. The town has the basics: grocery store, hardware store, post office, library, bank, a few restaurants and take-outs, medical center, etc., but very few tourist-oriented shops. Because of our well and septic system, we ask that you have no more than six people using the house. We do not allow smoking or pets.

Walk out onto the porch and look out over Winter Harbor, across Penobscot Bay to Mt Desert Island.
Now, walk a bit further out onto the rock and take in the panorama.
Turn around and have a look at the house.
